Hardinsburg Kentucky festivals


Hardinsburg began as Hardin's Station in 1780,
and was settled by William Hardin. The post office opened in 1803 as Breckinridge Court House. Breckinridge County was established in 1799 from part of Hardin County, and was named for John Breckinridge,

a Kentucky attorney general and legislator who later served in the U.S. Senate (and as U.S. attorney general.
  
In 1800, Breckinridge County became the 39th county. Later in 1824, part of Breckinridge County was used to form Meade County, and in 1829, Hancock County.
  
During the Civil War, Confederate guerrillas burned the local courthouse, but most of the records were saved. In the 19th century, the Victoria coal mines were the first to produce coal
oil, and Cloverport exported coal oil to Great Britain, where it was used to light Buckingham Palace.
