Hardinsburg, the seat of Breckinridge County, is along State Highways 108 and 259, and US Highway 60, about 57 miles southwest of Louisville. Hardinsburg began as Hardin's Station in 1780, and was settled by William Hardin.

Annual events in Breckinridge County include the Irvington Railroad Festival, Big Spring Down Home Day, the County Fair (Hardinsburg), Sacajawea Festival (Cloverport), the Custer Annual Picnic, the Hardinsburg Hoedown Day and more. There is a waterfowl refuge along the Ohio River, and a walking archery course is available.
